Functions of Brassinolide (BR)

Brassinolide (BR) is a broad-spectrum and efficient plant growth regulator. It was discovered by American agricultural scientists in 1970 and named brassinolide,  brassinolide is called the sixth type of plant hormone because of its small dosage and effective effects.

What does Brassinolide (BR) do?
Brassinolide (BR) is different from other plant growth regulators in its one-way targeting in promoting crop yield and improving quality. For example, it not only has the physiological functions of auxin and cytokinin, but also has the ability to increase photosynthesis and regulate nutrient distribution, promote the transport of carbohydrates from stems and leaves to grains, improve the crop's resistance to external adverse factors, and promote the growth of weak parts of the plant. Therefore, it has extremely wide usability and practicality.

1. Sweetening and coloring
Using Brassinolide (BR) can sweeten sugar cane and increase the proportion of medium and high-grade tobacco leaves. Using it on citrus can improve defects such as thick skin, scarred fruit, crooked fruit, and lignification caused by spraying gibberellins. Lychees, melons, etc. Used on beans, it can make the fruit uniform, improve the appearance, increase the selling price and increase income.

2. Delay leaf senescence
It keeps green for a long time, strengthens chlorophyll synthesis, improves photosynthesis, and promotes leaf color to deepen and turn green.

3. Promote flowers and preserve fruits
Used during the flowering stage and young fruit stage, it can promote flowers and fruits and prevent fruit drop.

4. Promote cell division and fruit enlargement
It can obviously promote the division of cells and promote the horizontal and vertical growth of organs, thereby enlarging the fruit.

5. Increase producton
Breaking the top advantage and promoting the germination of lateral buds can penetrate the differentiation of buds, promote the formation of lateral branches, increase the number of branches, increase the number of flowers, improve pollen fertilization, thereby increasing the number of fruits and increasing production.
6. Improve the commerciality of crops
Induces parthenocarpy, prevents flower and fruit drop, promotes protein synthesis, increases sugar content, improves crop quality, and improves marketability.

7. Regulate and balance nutrition
Brassinolide (BR) is not a foliar fertilizer and has no nutritional effect, so the mixed application of foliar fertilizer plus brassinolide is particularly effective. Foliar fertilizer can supplement plant nutrients, but it does not have the ability to balance and regulate nutrient transport; Brassinolide (BR) can transport nutrients in a balance manner, allowing nutrient directional conduction, so that both vegetative and reproductive growth of crops can receive reasonable nutrients.

8. Sterilize and increase efficiency, quickly restore growth
Fungicides can only suppress diseases but have little effect on restoring crop growth. Brassinolide can balance nutrient transport, promote root absorption, and promote photosynthesis. Therefore, when fungicides are mixed with brassinoids, their advantages are complementary. Brassinolide (BR) assists in disease treatment and has a good effect on crop recovery and growth.

9. Cold resistance, frost resistance, drought resistance and disease resistance
After Brassinolide (BR) enters the plant, it not only enhances photosynthesis and promotes growth and development, but also has a special protective effect on the plant cell membrane system to resist reverse environmental damage. It can also stimulate the activity of protective enzymes in the plant, greatly reducing harmful substances. Damage to the normal growth of plants and comprehensively improve the stress resistance of crops. 

Experiments have been conducted on rice, cucumbers, tomatoes, tobacco, etc., and the results are:
1) Low temperature:
Spraying Brassinolide (BR) can increase the seed setting rate of rice varieties by 40.1% under low temperature. Its physiological function of improving cold tolerance of rice is mainly manifested in improving the physiological metabolism of rice and promoting the growth and development of rice organs. Plants treated with Brassinolide (BR) have significantly improved cold resistance physiological indicators under the test conditions of 1 to 5°C.

2) High temperature:
The application of Brassinolide (BR) can significantly increase the leaf chlorophyll and protein content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities of heat-sensitive rice varieties.

3) Salt-alkali:
Seeds treated with Brassinolide (BR) can still maintain a high germination rate in a 150 mmol NaCl environment. After Brassinolide (BR)-treated barley plants were soaked in 500 mmol NaCl for 24 hours, ultramicroscopic examination showed that the structure of the barley leaves was protected.

4) Drought:
Crops such as sugar beet treated with Brassinolide (BR) grow better than the control group in a drought environment.

5) Disease resistance:
Brassinolide (BR) can also reduce the damage caused by certain plant diseases, such as rice sheath blight, cucumber gray mold and tomato late blight. In terms of tobacco, it not only promotes the growth of tobacco, but also has a control effect of 70% on tobacco mosaic disease. It is an ideal agent for preventing and treating tobacco mosaic disease. The disease resistance of plants is controlled by the genes of the plant itself. However, Brassinolide (BR) ester can comprehensively regulate the physiological and biochemical processes of the plant, thereby alleviating the disease. At the same time, as a plant hormone, Brassinolide (BR) may induce certain resistance. The expression of disease genes enhances the disease resistance of plants.

10. Promote seedling growth
When used as a seed treatment or sprayed at the seedling stage, Brassinolide (BR) plays a role in promoting root formation.

11. Yield-increasing effect
Scientific experimental data shows that after using brassinolides, rice production can be increase by 5.3%~12.6%, corn production can be increase by 6.3%~20.2%, melon and vegetable production can be increase by 12.6%~38.8%, peanut production can be increase by 10.4%~32.6%, and sugarcane production can be increase by 9.5%~ 18.9% (sugar content increases by 0.5%~1%).

12. Alleviate drug harm
Herbicides, incorrect use of fungicidal pesticides, or inappropriate concentration ratios can easily cause phytotoxicity. Timely use of Brassinolide (BR) plus high-quality foliar fertilizer can regulate nutrient transport, supplement nutrition, and reduce the damage to crops caused by improper use of medication damage, speeding up crop recovery and growth
