What should be considered when applying water-soluble fertilizers?

A key principle for applying water-soluble fertilizers is "little and often." Since plant roots absorb nutrients continuously, applying large amounts at once should be avoided, as this can damage the plants and result in material waste.

Water-soluble fertilizers are typically applied via drenching, pouring, or irrigation systems. Under drip irrigation (fertigation), root systems tend to be dense and extensive; consequently, plants rely less on soil nutrient reserves and more on the nutrients supplied through the irrigation system. This places higher demands on the balance and concentration of nutrients; an unbalanced formula can hinder crop growth.

Precautions for Drip Fertigation
First, when using drip fertigation, start by running fresh water to fill the pipes before introducing the fertilizer. Once fertilization is complete, run fresh water for another 20–30 minutes to flush out any residual fertilizer solution from the lines. Second, long-term use of drip fertigation in greenhouses or polytunnels can lead to salt accumulation on the soil surface, which inhibits root growth. Sub-mulch drip irrigation can be used to suppress the upward migration of salts to the surface. Third, ensure uniform application. In principle, the slower the fertilizer is applied, the better. Extending the application time—particularly for elements with low soil mobility—can significantly improve the utilization rate of these nutrients.

Irrigate Reasonably to Avoid Excess
Regarding irrigation volume, the goal is simply to keep the root zone moist. The depth of the root zone varies greatly depending on the crop; one can use a spade to dig into the soil and determine the specific root depth. Excessive irrigation not only wastes water but, more seriously, causes nutrients to leach below the root zone, resulting in fertilizer waste and reduced crop yields. Urea and nitrate-based nitrogen fertilizers, in particular, are highly susceptible to loss through water runoff. When used alongside other fertilizers, water-soluble fertilizers generally serve as top-dressing. Do not replace other fertilizers entirely with water-soluble ones; instead, use them in combination to lower costs and leverage the specific advantages of each fertilizer type.
