Main Functions and Effects:
Promoting Fruit Ripening: Ethephon accelerates the fruit ripening process and is commonly used in crops such as bananas, tomatoes, and citrus. For example, spraying bananas with ethephon after harvest can cause the peel to turn yellow and starch to convert into sugar, shortening the market time.

Inducing Organ Abscission: By promoting abscission layer formation, ethephon helps leaves, fruits, or flowers abscission. When used before cotton harvest, it can induce early leaf abscission, facilitating mechanized harvesting.
Breaking Seed or Bud Dormancy: In crops such as potatoes and peanuts, ethephon can break dormancy, promote uniform germination, and increase seedling emergence rate.
