Vietnam Develops New Strategy for Fruit Industry

According to the People's Daily, Vietnam's fruit exports experienced a significant decline in the first half of 2025 after two years of sustained rapid growth. The industry urgently needs to develop strategies to enhance its competitive advantage, focusing on products such as bananas, pineapples, coconuts, and passion fruit, which are showing growth and have the potential to approach or even exceed $1 billion in export value.
According to the Department of Plant Protection and Plant Protection of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Vietnam currently has over 1.3 million hectares of fruit plantations, with an annual output of approximately 15 million tons. Of this, 161,000 hectares are dedicated to bananas, over 52,000 hectares to pineapples, nearly 202,000 hectares to coconuts, and over 12,000 hectares to passion fruit.
Investing in Varieties and Technologies
Global demand for passion fruit, pineapples, coconuts, and bananas continues to grow, with many companies reporting insufficient supply to meet demand. However, achieving $1 billion in export value for these products requires a technological revolution, with varieties playing a key role.
"If we don't proactively restructure our industry now, we will lose our advantage and fall behind other countries in the same geographic region". "Therefore, we must promote research into new varieties, such as disease-free passion fruit for fresh consumption, pest-resistant bananas, high-yield pineapples suitable for processing, and high-yield fresh coconuts for export."
"Core production areas" must be clearly defined, with registered planting area codes and traceability based on quality control and technological integration. Businesses expect clear regulations to facilitate swift and efficient imports.
