What are the three types of plant growth regulators?

Plant growth regulators are categorized into three types: plant growth promoters, plant growth retardants, and plant growth inhibitors.

Details are as follows:
Plant growth promoters:
These stimulate plant cell division and organ differentiation, accelerate cell division and elongation, promote fruit ripening and the development of reproductive organs, and enhance metabolism and photosynthesis. Examples include auxins, gibberellic acid, and cytokinins.

Plant growth retardants:
These inhibit internode elongation, resulting in shorter plants, without hindering node formation, apical bud growth, or the development of leaves, flowers, and fruits. Examples include chlormequat chloride, paclobutrazol, and daminozide.

Plant growth inhibitors:
These inhibit auxin synthesis and the formation of proteins and nucleic acids in apical meristem cells; they slow down cell division, inhibit the elongation and differentiation of apical meristem cells, and promote lateral branch growth, resulting in stunted plants and smaller leaves. Examples include methylarsonates, sulfamic acid, and halogenated fatty acids.

In addition, there are other types of plant growth regulators—such as male gametocides, anti-transpirants, and freshness preservatives—but the primary classifications are the three mentioned above.
