Ethephon is a plant growth regulator that modulates plant physiological activities by releasing ethylene. It is primarily used to promote fruit ripening, induce organ abscission, break dormancy, and regulate flowering and fruiting; consequently, it is widely applied in agriculture and horticulture.

I. Main Functions and Effects of Ethephon
1. Ethephon Promotes Fruit Ripening
Ethephon accelerates the fruit ripening process and is frequently used for crops such as bananas, tomatoes, and citrus fruits. For instance, spraying bananas with Ethephon after harvest causes the peels to turn yellow and converts starch into sugars, thereby shortening the time required before the fruit is ready for market.

2. Ethephon Induces Organ Abscission
By promoting the formation of the abscission layer, Ethephon facilitates the shedding of leaves, fruits, or flowers. When applied to cotton crops prior to harvest, it induces premature leaf drop, thereby facilitating mechanized harvesting.

3. Ethephon Breaks Seed or Bud Dormancy
In crops such as potatoes and peanuts, Ethephon can break dormancy, promoting uniform germination and increasing the seedling emergence rate.

4. Ethephon Regulates Flowering and Fruiting
In tropical fruits such as pineapples and mangoes, Ethephon can induce flower bud differentiation, regulate flowering time, and enhance the fruit-setting rate.

5. Enhancing Stress Resistance and Increasing Yield
When applied at appropriate concentrations, Ethephon can bolster a plant's resistance to lodging (falling over) and disease, while simultaneously—through the coordination of nutrient allocation—indirectly boosting crop yields.
