Ethephon is a synthetic, low-toxicity plant growth regulator. Its primary function involves releasing ethylene upon entering the plant to modulate physiological processes; its key effects are as follows:

Fruit Ripening:
It accelerates color change and softening in fruits and vegetables such as bananas, tomatoes, and grapes, and promotes boll opening in cotton. This significantly shortens the post-harvest ripening period, facilitating centralized harvesting and market distribution.

Crop Growth Regulation:
It inhibits excessive stem elongation in crops like wheat and corn, resulting in shorter, sturdier plants with reduced lodging risk, while simultaneously promoting nutrient transport to the grain.

Induction of Female Flower Differentiation:
Timely spraying during the seedling stage of cucurbits (such as cucumbers and pumpkins) significantly increases the number of female flowers, reduces the proportion of male flowers, and improves fruit set and yield.

Promotion of Organ Abscission:
It can be used to selectively induce the formation of abscission layers, causing the shedding of leaves or fruit in crops like cherries and cotton. This aids in flower and fruit thinning as well as defoliation, thereby saving substantially on manual labor costs.

When used according to regulations, Ethephon degrades rapidly and leaves negligible residues; as humans lack specific receptors for it, it does not cause effects related to sex hormones.
