Characteristics of Common Flower and Fruit Thinning Regulators
Flower and fruit thinning agents are plant growth regulators that induce the abscission of a portion of flower buds or young fruit. Commonly used agents include dinitro-o-cresol (DNOC), 1-Naphthylacetic acid (NAA), phenylacetamide, and ethephon.
The insecticide carbaryl also possesses flower and fruit thinning properties. Na-NAA is frequently used on apple and pear trees, ethephon on apple trees, and carbaryl on apple and peach trees.

Effects of Ethephon:
Ethephon is readily absorbed by plants and gradually releases ethylene within the plant tissues. It enhances peroxidase activity, thereby reducing apical dominance and increasing effective tillering; this results in shorter, sturdier plants and prevents lodging. It can induce male sterility, promote early and abundant fruiting, and facilitate uniform, early fruit ripening. Additionally, it promotes defoliation in cotton and bud shedding in tea plants, and serves as a fruit ripening agent.
Na-NAA is a broad-spectrum plant growth regulator that promotes plant metabolism and photosynthesis.
In agriculture, it serves as a plant growth stimulant, exhibiting the physiological functions and characteristics of the endogenous auxin Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). These include promoting cell division and enlargement, inducing adventitious root formation, increasing tillering, improving spike formation, enhancing fruit set, preventing fruit drop, and altering the ratio of female to male flowers.
It enters the plant through leaves, tender bark, and seeds, and is translocated via the nutrient transport system to the sites of action. At higher concentrations, it inhibits growth. Soaking rice seedlings or wheat seeds in the solution can increase yields. It also prevents fruit and cotton drop; promotes rooting in cuttings and flowering; improves germination rates; accelerates crop maturity and increases yields; and prevents flower and fruit drop while inducing the formation of seedless fruit.
