Using Forchlorfenuron to Promote Fruit Set and Fruit Enlargement

Forchlorfenuron is a highly active, synthetic cytokinin-type plant growth regulator. Its primary function is to potently promote fruit set and fruit enlargement. With an activity level 5–10 times greater than that of standard 6-BA, it stands as one of the most effective agents for increasing fruit size in modern agricultural production.

Key Physiological Functions of Forchlorfenuron

Potent Promotion of Fruit Set:
Forchlorfenuron regulates the balance of endogenous plant hormones and facilitates the germination and elongation of pollen tubes, significantly boosting pollination success. Especially under adverse conditions—such as low temperatures or rainy weather, which often hinder pollination—it effectively reduces flower and fruit drop, potentially increasing the fruit set rate to over 95%.

Rapid Fruit Enlargement:
It directly stimulates rapid cell division and longitudinal elongation within the fruit. By driving the targeted transport of photosynthetic nutrients toward the fruit, it leads to a significant increase in fruit volume, resulting in uniform and well-filled fruit. When used according to guidelines, it can increase the yield of melon and gourd crops by 30%–50%.

Induction of Parthenocarpy:
Forchlorfenuron enables crops that struggle with natural pollination—particularly in controlled-environment (greenhouse) settings—to develop into seedless or low-seed fruits, even without standard pollination. This makes it perfectly suited for out-of-season greenhouse cultivation.

Delayed Senescence and Stress Resistance:
It regulates the activity of antioxidant enzymes within the plant, helping to clear free radicals and mitigate oxidative damage. This extends the functional photosynthetic lifespan of leaves while enhancing the crop's tolerance to environmental stressors such as drought, low temperatures, and soil salinity or alkalinity, thereby preventing growth stagnation caused by adverse conditions.
